Aeonic Radios: A Short-Lived Brand with Ambitious Plans While information is limited, here's what we can glean about Aeonic radios: - Origins (1928): Aeonic Wireless Co., Ltd. likely started around 1928, manufacturing portable five-valve receivers. They showcased these at the September 1928 Olympia Exhibition, highlighting features like easy waveband switching and good sound quality. [1]
- Merger and Expansion (November 1928): In November 1928, Aeonic Wireless merged with J. L. Gottlieb & Co., Ltd. to form Aeonic Radio, Ltd. This new company aimed bigger, with a capital of £225,000, and plans to manufacture and sell various radio equipment, including gramophones, and electrical distribution boards. [2]
- Financial Difficulties and Innovation (1928-1930): Despite the merger, Aeonic Radio faced financial difficulties. By November 1928, Aeonic Wireless was already in voluntary liquidation.
- However, Aeonic Radio continued developing products. Advertisements from June 1930 showcase their "1930 standard suitcase 5-valve portable" designed for both mains and battery power, aiming to overcome the "summertime wireless slump." They even ventured into manufacturing battery charging equipment. [3]
- Demise and Legacy (1930-1932): In June 1930, Aeonic Radio itself went into voluntary liquidation. Shareholders received shares in a new company, "Electrical and Radio Products Ltd.," suggesting a potential continuation of the radio business under a new name. A legal case in June 1932 highlights outstanding debts from Aeonic Radio's liquidation, indicating the company's final closure.[4]
Aeonic's legacy remains limited. Despite early innovation and attempts to diversify, their financial struggles led to a short lifespan.
