Astor CPN
The first Australian pocket portable. In an attractive gift pack complete with earphone for personal listening. Six transistors give high sensitivity and powerful performance. Four colour combination.
This radio is unusual in that it uses a circuit board but not a “Printed” circuit board. The board is punched or drilled and all wiring is “point to point” on the “non-component: side of the board. There are actually three components on that side of the board. All transistors are mounted in sockets. When the board is removed from the case, the tuning dial remains captive in the fascia. The front panel is clear perspex.
- Speaker 2¾" Rola Type 2 C.
- Batteries 4 x 1.5V AA.
- Colours avalable in Blossom Pink, Coral, Cherry Red, Chinese Red, Dark Green, Grey, Black, Lime, Tan, Lawn Green & Charcoal. Each colour is available in four versions to suit NSW, VIC/TAS, QLD & SA/WA.

If ever any radio can be called a "Transision Model", this would qualify. The Circuit Board is drilled and there is no printed copper, just point-to-point wiring. The larger Astors of this era, E.G. the HPN, used tag strips and point-to-point wiring whilst all the later "pocket" radios that are the same size as the CPN use printed circuit boards. The wiring from the rod antenna to the board is over-long and flimsy. Along with many (most?) transistor radios of this era, my example has suffered from leaking batteries.
