  • Notes
  • High resistivity potentiometer.

The variation of resistivity is based on the compression of carbon powder inside the metal box, similar to the functioning of a carbon microphone.

Variable resistor based on the principle of carbon powder compression. A strong metal case (steel, brass) is filled with carbon powder and a piston is forced against the powder by turning a threaded screw. One contact is given by the metal case while the other contact is a smaller, from the case insulated, metal plate opposite to the piston and in contact with the carbon powder. A feed through is provided by a screw for electrical connection. The resistance range, depending on pressure, is typically from 5 kΩ to 1 MΩ.
