  1 Die später als Zenith Corp. bekannt und auch richtig groß gewordene Firma begann 1921 mit dem Radiobau, damals unter dem Namen "Chicago Radio Labs". Die ersten "Serien"-Geräte (ab 1922) hießen R1 (1-Röhren Audion), R2 (2-Röhren NF Verstärker), R3 (4-Röhren TRF) und R4 (4-Röhren TRF). Zumindest von letzteren beiden existieren mehrere Varianten. Der R3 und der R4 trugen zusätzlich zum damaligen Markennamen außerdem die Aufschrift "Zenith". Der R4 war der letzte Zenith, auf dem auch noch "Chicago Radio Labs" stand. 1925 firmierte Chicago Radio Labs offiziell in Zenith um.

Alle frühen Zeniths haben das Problem, daß die gesamte Mechanik aus Zinkguß bestand (am.: pot metal) und die Achsen der Einstellelemente praktisch immer festsitzen. Gewaltanwendung führt zwingend zum Bruch der Achse und oft auch zum Reißen des Frontpanels.
