  • Garrard Magazine Tape Deck

    This tape deck used the Garrard  1/4" tape on 4" spools in a transparent cassette.

    The Garrard Tape Magazine makes the whole procedure of tape loading so easy that a young child could do it without bother. There is no threading and anchoring, as with other types of the tape deck.

    The controls have been kept to the absolute minimum: one for Record/ Off/Playback, and a second for fast winding. A shaft extension is provided on the record/playback switch so that, if required, extra wafer switches can be fitted for controlling the appropriate electronic circuits. As the Tape Magazine can be turned over easily, fast wind is provided in a forward direction only.

    A fixing template is supplied with the deck, also operating instructions, and one tape magazine, complete with tape. An interesting feature is that the tape magazine can be removed from the tape deck at any time, without the bother of winding the tape onto one of the spools.

    The Magazine deck could also take standard open reels of tape, provided they were no more than 4 inches in diameter.

    This was Gerrard’s attempt at bringing quality tape recording and playing within range of everyone. Unfortunately for Garrard the decks never sold that well and were eventually superseded by the far more successful Phillip's Compact Cassette, which was launched in 1963.

    It was fitted to;

    • Stern Radio Model HF/G2A Amplifier and the Model HF/G2P Preamplifier tape recorders.
    • Simon Sound Services used it in the Cymbal, Ministrelle, Ministrelle 4
    • Murphy used it in the TR1 tape magazine recorder.
