  • PE-73 / PE-73-C Dynamotor Unit

The PE-73 (and its variant PE-73-C) is a heavy-duty dynamotor (rotary converter) manufactured primarily by General Electric during World War II. It was designed specifically to supply high-voltage DC power to the BC-375-E radio transmitter (part of the SCR-287 aircraft radio set).

Main function: Converts the aircraft’s standard 24/28 V DC battery voltage into approximately 1000 V DC at up to 350 mA for the transmitter’s plate circuits. It consists of a single-shaft motor-generator unit (low-voltage motor + high-voltage generator), mounted together with a relay-fuse box containing a starting relay, fuses (low- and high-voltage), capacitors, and connection sockets (SO-39 and SO-41).

    Technical Data:

    • Input: 24–28 V DC (nominal 26–28 V recommended)
    • Input current: 20–30 A (depending on load; includes starting surge)
    • Output: approx. 1025-1050 V DC at 350 mA (at 24 V input)
    • Mounting: FT-107

The PE-73 runs continuously while the transmitter is in standby (high voltage is present even when not keyed). It was used on many US Army Air Forces bombers and medium aircraft such as the B-17 Flying Fortress, B-24 Liberator, B-25, etc.
