The Magnavox Concert Grand 1ST800F French Provincial is an AM/FM Stereo Phonograph console. It was manufactured from approximately 1959 to 1962. It was Magnavox's top-of-the-line radio-phonograph during those years.
The tuner chassis uses 12 tubes and has six controls on the front, which include Loudness (volume), Tuning, Bass, Treble, On-Off-Timbre (tone color), and Band switch. The band switch has five settings: Stereo (phonograph), FM Mpx, FM, AM, and Tape (aux input). There is a "magic eye" tuning indicator.
The unit has a hand-held, transistorized, wireless remote control that controls volume and tuning. The remote is sensed via a separate, dedicated remote receiver chassis. Volume and tuning are changed via motors incorporated into the tuner chassis. There are two controls in the phonograph compartment to adjust operation of the remote control. One control affects Local - Distance sensitivity for station searching, and the other control adjusts Phantom cancellation.
The stereo audio amplifier consists of two amplifier chassis, one for the left channel and one for the right, each using 12 tubes apiece. Each channel is bi-amplified, with separate amps for bass and treble amplification. The treble amplifier of each channel is driven by two 6V6GT tubes in push-pull. The bass amplifier is driven by six 6V6GT tubes in triple-push-pull.
The speaker complement consists of two 15-inch round electrodynamic woofers, and two 4x10-inch rectangular electrodynamic 1000-cycle horns. All speakers are forward-facing. Left and right channel speakers are sealed in ported enclosures on the left and right end of the unit. There are outputs provided to drive external speakers or audio outputs, and there is a switch that allows selection of various combinations of internal or external speakers or audio outputs.
The five chassis are as follows:
61-01 - AM/FM tuner. Tubes: 6CY5, 6EA8, 6BA6 (x3), 6BE6, 6E5, 6AL5, 12AX7A (x3), 12AU7.
82-01-00 - Monoblock amplifier. Tubes/each: 12AX7A (x2), 6V6GT (x8), 5U4GB (x2). The unit contains two of these amplifiers, one per channel Left/Right.
700832-1 - Tuner power supply. Tube: 5Y3GT.
700842-1 - Remote receiver chassis. Tubes: EF93, 6CM7, EBC91, 6U8A, 6X4.
700782-3 - Remote control transmitter. Transistors: TS-792 (x2), 2N212.The unit uses a 4-speed "Magnavox Imperial" stereo record changer which was manufactured by Collaro in England. It supports 16, 33, 45, and 78 rpm playback.
The unit could be optionally outfitted with an FM Multiplex chassis, such as the Magnavox 7001-00 or the Magnavox 7002-00. The FM Multiplex chassis allows the Concert Grand to decode FM stereo. Withouth this optional sixth chassis, FM playback is limited to monaural-only. With or without the FM multiplexer, phonograph reproduction is always in stereo.
