• Wireless Set No.62: narrow range shortwave transceiver covering 1,6 - 10 MHz in two ranges (1,6-4/4-10 MHz), CW (A1) and AM (A3) modes; RF output power CW 0,8-1,1 Watts, AM 0,5-0,8 Watts.
  Powered by 12 V vehicle accumulator, internal rotary transformer for 340 V HT. 8, 14 or 32 foot rod for mobile use, wire aerial for ground station use.
  Wireless Set No.62 is a general purpose low-power transceiver with a similar appearence and frequency coverage as the Wireless Set No.19, suitable as low power ground station, vehicle station, animal or manpack set. The transceiver is immersion proof for 5 minutes and late models stable enough for parachute dropping.
  The set replaces Wireless Set No.22.

  The Wireless Set No. 62 MKII is a British Army HF-band radio transceiver developed by Pye Ltd (UK) during the late stages of World War II, replacing the earlier Wireless Set No. 22. The MKII version features multiple design improvements, including a lighter aluminium case and better reception performance compared to the Mark I. It was notable for being waterproof, semi-tropicalized, and suitable for both vehicle-mount and portable operation, including as a man-pack radio for airborne and infantry forces.

  • Accessories: Integrated power supply, aerial tuner, multiple whip or wire antenna options, Crystal Calibrator No. 10 for frequency reference.
  • Service life: First trials in 1944, produced for the UK, Australia, and India through 1966, used by airborne, SAS, regular army, and even in light aircraft and helicopters in postwar conflicts.

  MKII Improvements and Use

  The MKII replaced the metal waist strap of the Mark I with a flexible fabric strap (for airborne deployment) and included extra case strengthening.

  Used as a man-pack, vehicle, and ground station radio, it saw service not only in WWII but in the Korean War and beyond, thanks to its reliability and versatility.

  It is a true transceiver: a single oscillator drives both receiver and transmitter, maintaining frequency alignment.

  Other companies manufactured the Wireless Set No. 62 MKII, but these were all within the Pye Group and its affiliates. The primary manufacturing company was Pye Ltd in Cambridge, UK. However, the set was also produced by Pye affiliate companies in Australia (notably Electronic Industries Ltd, Melbourne) and under license in India by Bharat Electronics Ltd. No non-Pye or external electronics companies manufactured the Wireless Set No. 62 MKII due to Pye privately funding the design and maintaining manufacturing rights within its group.

  All main production for the UK, Australia, and India remained under Pye Group companies or their direct licensees throughout its service life.
