  • The Navy ARA receiver series was designed by Aircraft Radio Corporation and adopted in 1939 by the US Navy as Command receivers for CW or Voice / MCW.  The sets included two IF stages, an RF stage and BFO. The frequency control by the pilot was by means of mechanical cabling along with electrical connections to the aircraft cockpit.

The CCT-46104 version of the ARA series was designed for frequencies from 1.5 to 3 MHz with an IF of 705 kHz.  The IF frequency was unique and optimized for each type depending upon frequency coverage.  The output was designed for headphones to match Navy requirements.

The Army Air Force adopted a very similar system as the SCR-274N series in 1940  which was later upgraded to the joint AN/ARC-5 series.
