The Plessey 77 Mk IV is a professional, transportable magnetic tape recorder engineered for high-reliability studio and broadcast environments. Manufactured by Plessey Electronics Pty. Ltd. in Australia, it continues a tape recorder lineage originally developed by Byer, later produced by Rola, and subsequently by Plessey and CEI.

    • The deck features a rugged three-motor transport system that enables direct-drive tape movement in both recording and playback modes, eliminating drive belts and maximizing tape handling stability.
    • It uses a full-track, three-head configuration with dedicated erase, record, and playback heads, providing simultaneous erase, record, and replay across the full width of standard ¼-inch tape, which minimises drop-out and tape hiss.
    • A two-speed capstan motor supports professional standard tape speeds of 7.5 ips and 15 ips, aided by a heavy flywheel for exceptionally smooth operation and minimized wow and flutter.
    • Inputs accommodate both line-level and microphone sources, while low-impedance outputs are designed to interface with standard 600-ohm broadcast lines.
    • Tape transport controls feature color-coded pushbuttons, with optional remote control and an electronically regulated shuttle speed for fast and accurate cueing.
    • The machine is available in a rack-mount form factor for fixed studio installations, as well as portable versions for field work.

Production of the 77 Mk IV transitioned to Consolidated Electronic Industries in the mid-1970s, with only minor changes, maintaining its reputation as a workhorse professional recorder.
