  • This first ever "Walkman" TPS-L2 with a full metal case was introduced in 1979 and was named differently in different countries: Japan and some other countries = Walkman; USA = SoundAbout "Stereo Cassette Player"; UK = Stowaway; Sweden = Freestyle.

    Der erste portable Casettenspieler von Sony, der TPS-L2 von 1979 mit Ganzmetallgehäuse, wurde 1979 noch als "TPS-L2" lanciert und später (1979/1980) als "Walkman (TM)" oder "Soundabout" etc. - je nach Land - bezeichnet. Standardfarbe für den TPS-L2 ist Blau-Metallic eloxiert. TPS steht für "Tape-Player-Stereo" im Gegensatz zu den Tape-Corder-Stereo, TCS.

    Sony hatte aber verschiedene Patentinhaber zu befriedigen, da der Gedanke nicht neu war. So gab es z.B. in Deutschland Mitte der 70er Jahre einen Prototyp genannt "Stereobelt". In den 90er Jahren kam es zu einer Einigung zwischen dem Sony-Konzern und dem Stereobelt-Entwickler Pavel.
