  • Annotazioni
  • A recorder/player that followed the wire recorder and preceded the magnetic tape recorder . It was built by its inventor Ludwig Blattner and was based on a design by German inventor Dr. Kurt Stille, The BBC evaluated a machine in 1930 and found it suitable for recording voice but not music so in January 1931 the BBC acquired one, and later, three more. The machines were built in Germany and in the UK.

The recorder used a tape made with the same material as razor blades, 3mm (later 6 mm) wide and 0.08 mm thick, running at 5 feet per second.

A full spool had a weight of 21 lbs and a length of more than a mile of tape and could record just twenty minutes.

The Marconi Company bought the Blattnerphone rights in March 1933. The BBC replaced all but one of the Blattnerphones with Marconi-Stille machines during 1935.

The remaining machine was used in September 1939 to record Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain's speech declaring war on Germany.
