Description

This is the Admiralty standardized code for the early S-band magnetron E1189. First use in March 1941 on the HMS Orchis corvette. 10 kW typical peak power, 5 kW minimum at 10 cm.

Later in 1941 it originated four frequency selections, identified by A, B, C or D suffix indicating the operating frequency.

NT98 was used in the Naval radar Type 271.

Manufactured by GEC and BTH in Britain. NT98 was also manufactured overseas by manufacturers related to Bell Telephone. In Canada it was produced by Northern Electric as REL Type 3D, while in Australia it was made by Standard Telephone and Cables as NTA98.

The development of the E1189 magnetron at GEC can be read at this link.
