  • Marconi Octagonal Cone Speaker

This innovative speaker employs a "plaque" design. At the centre of its grille sits a circular brown moulded cover housing the driving unit, complete with an adjustment knob. The rigid paper cone measures approximately nine inches in diameter. Finished in satin mahogany, the unit presents an aesthetically pleasing appearance.

A protective iron framework behind the plaque safeguards the cone from significant damage, while an integrated strut allows versatile placement—either freestanding on a table, positioned atop a receiver, or wall-mounted. The terminal panel features metal connectors, with the positive terminal distinctly identified by its copper plating. The electromagnetic mechanism utilises an adjustable reed configuration.

The drive rod incorporates an aluminum tube pressed over its structure to eliminate vibration-induced "whip." During testing, the speaker demonstrated notably bright tonal characteristics, likely attributable to its compact cone size. While bass reproduction proved less pronounced compared to Marconi's Model 75, the absence of resonant "drumminess" resulted in exceptionally clear audio output, particularly excelling in speech articulation. Volume levels remained slightly lower than the Model 75, primarily due to reduced low-frequency response. However, the Octagonal Speaker handled standard room-filling inputs without distortion or buzzing, making it ideally suited for three- and four-valve receiver configurations. Its combination of practical design and refined acoustics positions it as a compelling choice for discerning listeners.

The Marconi Octagonal Cone Speaker was manufactured in Great Britain and imported by AWA.
