philips: Philips primo de el BX290U ?
Mario Coelho

Saludos
Mário

philips: One Philips BX290U "cousin" ?
Mario Coelho

Dear Radio Friends

I have one Philips BX 295U. I think it is a BX 290U cousin.
Has you can see below, it is similar.
Tubes are equal: UCH42 UAF42 UBC41 UL41 UY41
If you follow the schematic diagram you can't see differences.

I think this is the 290 model, not a brother or a cousin. The only difference is the last number five.  BX 295 U.

I herd this number five means "To export".
Do you agree?

Best Regards
Mário

Mário,

The number 5 at this position means a set constructed for use in tropical area's.

Differences between the BX290U and the BX295U are the available wave bands. The LW band of the BX290U is replaced by a second SW band ("tropical band") for the BX295U

The dial scale printing is also changed, no station names are visible at a BX295U scale.

Dear all,

This version branded "Fenno Sointu"  utilizes also the 290 chasich and has been assemblied in Philips Helsinki factory . It is expectional due to wooden cabinet. Fenno is an old Finnish radio barand/factory which was equired by Philips late 1930ties.

Hello John,

Thank you for your complete explanation. Now I can understand the meaning of that number five in this Philips radio sets.

Your contribution is excellent and I think it constitutes a mark for our knowledge of Philips codes meaning.

I’ve also one BX205U. This one has also MW/SW instead of MW/ LW from BX200U.

But this BX205U has the broadcast stations printed in Portuguese language...

http://www.radiomuseum.org/r/philips_bx205u.html

Maybe only for BX295U the dial-scale has no station names. Do you agree?

Best Regards

Hi Mário,

Most "tropical" Philips radios only have numbers written on their dial scale, no station names. But there are always exceptions, the Philips BX305U also has station names.
