philips: Philips piano button problem
Vincent Cappuccitti

Does anyone have experience repairing piano buttons on a Philips radio? I am repairing a B5X88A radio that has a problem with the off button not operating correctly. The previous owner installed an on/off switch on the chord which works fine. However I prefer to have the button working properly.

The mechanism does not move the connections unless manually pulled or pushed with pliers. I have taken off the end cover exposing the contacts and wonder if it is missing a spring. Are there any drawings or pictures that I could refer to?

Heinrich Stummer

Hello, the button lever and the contact rod are linked together with a torsion spring.(I've seen on a B5X43 type) This springs are hard to find. You have to figure out the missing part of the aparatus. I'm sorry I have no photo of a similar piano assembly yet.

Best regards

Heinrich, I have tried to attach two pictures of the mechanism that I'm referring to. It's not the main shaft and torsion spring. It is located within the piano button enclosure. The pictures were taken with the end cover removed.

I don't know for sure  if it's a spring that is missing but there is something not working correctly because the two plates slide across each other without having any effect on each other.

They should move the mains contacts to OFF and ON positions. I can make a spring if needed as long as I know how it should be connected.

Much appreciated.
