Summary: |
C & A Odlin Timber and Hardware Co. Ltd. (Odlins)
C. and A. Odlin were New Zealand distributors for Mullard, Fleetwood, and US Atwater Kent radios. Early models were UK & US exports. After 1939 Mullard and Fleetwood radio models were locally manufactured by Philips NZ. |
History: |
In 1901 Charles Camperdown Odlin commenced business as a timber merchant at 28 Hopper St, Wellington. From the beginning his brother Alfred Odlin was an associate and in 1903 the brothers went into formal partnership as C. and A. Odlin, timber merchants. The business continued to expand and in 1907 the company was incorporated as a public company. The brothers worked hard so their business grew and bloomed and they were public-spirited, starting the first free ambulance service in Wellington in 1927. Odlins also delved into radio retailing and had the Atwater Kent licence in New Zealand from the mid-1920s. Public broadcasting in New Zealand started in about 1922/23 with the first serious radio transmissions from Professor Robert Jack, who experimentally broadcast from the Otago University buildings in 1921. Odlins were New Zealand distributors for a number of radio brands including US Atwater Kent, and UK Mullard and one of these lines under their own label was "Fleetwood" which were sets manufactured by Philips. In 1986 the Odlins company was taken over by Fletchers. Sources: [1] Dominion 29 September 1926, Page 9.
